Mozes recently blogged about "
the death of email" after a post by
The Telegraph. "The article reports that people emailed 6% less in September than they did at the same time last year. And by contrast, texting/IMing are up 34%." Mozes has proclaimed "email has been killed."
A 6% drop hardly constitutes "death"... as if text, IM and email are opposing forces or at odds with each other.
As the Telegraph goes on to state "Just as email did not entirely kill off letter writing, messaging, texting, poking, tweeting and blogging are unlikely to kill off email. Instead they will co-exist and complement one another. ..You can now send and receive every kind of message - texts, IMs, emails, and Facebook posts - with most new mobile phones.
And "compliment" is the issue for us. It isn't about one technology being better than another. Each one has its usefullness and demographics.
Email is still the cornerstone to an online relationship. Try getting a facebook account without an email, or myspace or writing a blog. Try working in the corporate world without an email.
What smart marketers are doing is thinking about how the mediums compiment each other to:
DELIVER THE RIGHT MESSAGE
TO THE RIGHT FAN
AT THE RIGHT TIME
THROUGH THE RIGHT MEDIUM
Now... go write your grandmother a christmas card. And please... please do not twitter it.
