The Rest of the Story
There has been much talk online and in blogs about Ian Rogers and the coming out of Topspin from stealth mode into slightly less than stealth mode. Gotta love the ollie on the cover of Billboard Magazine and we are really excited about what they are cooking.
We are fortunate that FanMail has acted as the fan communication and fan relationship management (FRM) mechanism for one of the Topspin success stories with our mutual client The Dandy Warhols.
Ian says:
The Dandy Warhols recently left Capitol Records after a string of masterpieces, none of which sold to the label’s liking but all of which achieved cult status. For their new record they decided to reward their biggest fans first by offering a subscription package including: the new album months before it hits stores, a silkscreened poster and the physical CD in your home mailbox, and every b-side as it’s released in your email box for $35. The record is fantastic and you can preview the whole thing on their site for free. Try, buy, enjoy.
So while topspin has been running the store, it has been FanMail quitely working behind the scenes to make sure that the fan permissions are being collected and the right message is being delivered to the right fan at the right time.
Check our client success blog on the subject.

The Shifting Focus
eMarketer has a new article out that is of great interest to those of us in the music industry. Basically, it says that while digital music purchases are up, the revenue generated by these sales is still down, per capita, from what it was is 1995.
The most interesting point that was made, in my opinion, was that record sales are no longer the core source of revenue for artists, but instead concert tickets and merchandising have moved into the foreground.
This just re-affirms what we at FanMail have been saying. It is more important than ever to find ways to keep the fans involved and connected. Through integrations with FrontGate Solutions, as well as various digital shopping carts and ticketing outfits, there are an amazing number of ways to efficiently and effectively engage the core fans and to encourage their continued involvement with the music that they love.

SUBSCRIBERS RULE!
We believe that the most effective one-to-one marketing programs seek to communicate with people, not lists.
This statement is much more than an affirmation of our long-held policy that email, SMS, and other one-to-one marketing efforts must be built upon a foundation of permission. Rather, it is a broader acknowledgement that we, as marketers, bear a responsibility to deploy one-to-one marketing technologies in ways that put subscriber needs first.
We believe that the subscriber rules the one-to-one marketing environment, and must be given the means to dictate and control the manner and frequency by which companies can communicate with them.
The subscriber-centric philosophy is built upon three simple directives:
- Serve the individual
- Honor their unique preferences with regard to communication channels, content & frequency
- Deliver them timely, relevant content that improves their lives
Check out the new whitepaper from our partner ExactTarget on subscriber preference. The interesting thing to note is the preferances between email, sms and social network messages. Enjoy! Labels: best practices, e-mail marketing, subscribers, superfan

Our friend Jeff Rohrs from FanMail technology partner ExactTarget does a spot on critique of Coldplay's direct to fan release. What they did right and what they could have done better.

From the Lefsetz Letter:
"We are speaking of the aforementioned e-mail list here. Yes, you have got to collect names. But how?"
By making it a better offer, a better business proposition.
A Website is no longer just a repository of information, it is the front door to your fan club. You may be a musician, but second to that, you are running a club. You have to spread the word on your music, you have to create demand for your tour. This is especially true for so called "heritage" artists."

Check out Bob Lefsetz's post called " net oppertunities".
"First and foremost, for the very first time in history, you can know who your audience is. You can collect the e-mail address of everybody who likes your music. Maybe give a track away for free for an e-mail address. Maybe not all of the addresses will be valid, but if they are truly fans, they would LOVE IT if you contacted them in the future. This is what Led Zeppelin did with their O2 ticket sale, this is what Radiohead did with their name your own price "In Rainbows" deal, this is what Trent Reznor does again and again. You have to harvest e-mail addresses. So when you go on tour, when you have got something to sell, you can ALERT YOUR FANS!"
